American gymnastics legends Simone Biles, 27, and Gabby Douglas, 28, entered 2024 with the same goal: to qualify for the Paris Olympics.
With just one major meet left to determine the five U.S. women's Olympic team members, the two former gold medalists find themselves on opposite trajectories.
Biles is soaring after defeating seven former Olympic and world championship medalists over the weekend to win the Core Hydration Classic in Connecticut.

Douglas, meanwhile, pulled out of the meet after falling twice on the uneven bars.
"I have to give myself a little bit of grace," Douglas said after her surprise withdrawal. "It ended rough for me in 2016, so I didn't want to end on that note. I want to make sure I end on love and joy instead of hating something that I love."
Biles and Douglas are changing the face of global gymnastics with their longevity. In a sport where 20 was long considered over the hill, their consistency and competitiveness are something to behold.
"I love this generation," Douglas stated of herself and Biles. "We're pushing the boundaries and saying, 'Hey, you don't have to be 16.'"
The return of Biles and Douglas, along with Tokyo 2020 all-around champion Sunisa Lee, means the American gymnastics field is more crowded than ever.

But it's not just the former Olympic champions making noise. Jordan Chiles, part of the 2020 Tokyo team that won silver, has dominated NCAA gymnastics since and looks primed for an Olympic comeback in Paris.
21-year-old Shilese Jones is also one to watch. She took home gold medals at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships and finished second at the Core Hydration Classic, where she outscored Biles on the uneven bars.

"This is her journey and this is her gymnastics," Jones' coach, Sarah Korngold, told Olympics.com after her strong performance. "Nobody's going to get in her way. It's really cool to watch someone take charge and own their gymnastics; she's doing this 100% for her."
The U.S. Gymnastics National Championships are on May 30 in Fort Worth, Texas. That event will determine which five gymnasts will represent the United States in Paris. Biles, Douglas, Lee, Chiles and Jones are expected to compete.
