Los Angeles Chargers WR Ladd McConkey is already connecting with Justin Herbert at OTAs
Joshua L. Jones / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Los Angeles Chargers used this offseason to somewhat gut their roster. They got rid of several key weapons that quarterback Justin Herbert once had long ago, like running back Austin Ekeler and wide receivers Mike Williams and Keenan Allen.

So, they went into the 2024 NFL Draft with the wide receiver on their mind, again, after drafting two last season. This year, they went and got wide receiver Ladd McConkey with their second pick, wide receiver Brenden Rice with their eighth pick, running back Kimani Vidal with their seventh pick, and wide receiver Cornelius Johnson with their last pick.

It's pretty clear they made it their mission to help Herbert this offseason after losing some significant pieces. And, from what we have seen, Herbert is already getting on with his new weapons, but more specifically, Ladd McConkey could be a guy who sneakily flies into the Offensive Rookie of the Year conversation at the end of the 2024 season.

On Monday, the Chargers started their first group of OTAs, and from some of the clips the team has posted on its socials, Herbert is connecting with McConkey on some very nice throws. McConkey also shows his burst after the catch.

Now, obviously, this is just practice with no defenders or pads. But, it's good to see your franchise quarterback and potentially franchise wide receiver connecting on some passes early in their tenure together. Building chemistry isn't easy by any means, so the Chargers are getting that out of the way early.

McConkey could end up being a safety blanket type of player in 2024 for Herbert. The Chargers were geniuses for drafting him, and he and Herbert are already doing what we hope to see during the actual season.
